Buying grave markers or memorials can be an overwhelming process because there are so many options to choose from. You have to decide whether you want a baseline memorial or a high-end option. You’ll also need to choose the material and size.

In regard to grave marker costs, you can expect to pay a few hundred dollars for a baseline option and $1,500 to $3,000 for a standard option.

As you get up to high-end markers, they can easily cost as much as $20,000.

3 Contributing Factors to Grave Marker Prices

How much do grave markers cost? It simply depends on what you want. When considering the cost of a grave marker, you have to look at a few key aspects of how it’s made, the size, and what you want on it.

Grave Marker Materials Costs

1. Material

One of the biggest contributing factors to go into the cost of grave markers is the material type. While many people choose the material according to how it looks, you may also want to consider its longevity and durability. A long-lasting material will withstand the test of time and look beautiful for decades or even centuries to come.

Other than looking at the longevity and price of grave markers, you may also want to consider the maintenance requirements. Some options may require repairs every few years and may not be an ideal choice for your family’s memorial investment.

Finally, you should consider the look and overall appearance of the grave markers.

Bronze: Bronze is a popular option for grave markers. A flat bronze marker is a beautiful choice. As an added benefit, it is exceptionally low maintenance after it is installed.

Granite: Some people prefer a classic, traditional grave marker. If traditional is what you want, an upright or flat granite marker is an excellent selection. Granite stones last for a long time, so you can even find cemeteries with granite from hundreds of years ago.

Marble: When the price is a concern, marble is a good choice. In addition to being economical, it also has an exceptionally elegant look. With multiple colors and shades available, marble also allows you to customize the appearance a little more than the others.

Once the material is selected, you can choose other features for the grave markers. Other than the physical element, there are also shapes and styles you can choose from. The right choice for you depends on the overall look of the marker, longevity, and maintenance.

Single Companion Grave Marker Sizes

2. Size

Another major factor in the price of grave markers is the size. Generally, you can likely imagine that a larger marker will cost more than a smaller one. For a standard, single marker with one name and one set of dates, the size will either be 24″ x 12″ or 24″ x 14″.

You may also consider getting companion markers. These flat markers include two sets of dates and names, often used for couples or even close friends. For this option, the typical size is either 36″ x 13″ or 44″ x 14″.

The grave marker’s cost will normally be higher if you decide on a custom size. Depending on the size and shapes available, though these will lead to an added charge and are available upon request.

Customization Options For Grave Marker Costs

3. Amount of Customization

As a lasting testament to someone’s life, a grave marker is a tribute to your loved one. Because of this, many people decide to customize the marker with different features that make them stand out and give them something extra for future generations to enjoy. Options like changing the size or color can add to the cost of grave markers.

Depending on the level of customization, you may end up adding hundreds or thousands of dollars to the cost of the grave marker once it’s completed. Ultimately, this is

Color options: Long ago, people were able to customize grave markers using the material, size and names on the markers. There were different types of marble available, but it was difficult to customize the color. Now, it is possible to customize the color on bronze and granite markers as well.

Photo options: Another way to customize grave markers is through photo options. This is a recent trend in the industry, allowing a clear and colorful photo of the individual to be placed on the marker. Today, higher quality photos are available, and it is now possible to meet customer demand for this customization option.

Size and shape options: If you want to exercise some creativity with the design of the grave markers, consider the many size and shape options. This is especially true for marble and granite uprights. It is even possible to get markers designed in shapes like different states or motorcycles.

Depending on the company you buy your grave marker from, there will be certain manufacturing limitations. This means a custom-sized marker can cost thousands of dollars more as they try to outsource the extra work, meaning you may not be able to afford what you want.

At Trigard Memorials, we don’t have limitations on the size or shape. We are able to produce any size or shape you want with minimal additional charges.

Once you find the right grave marker, you may also want to customize details like the font on the marker and other details. The price may vary based on how much you want to write or if you want a photo attached.

I like how you mentioned that the material used for a grave marker is the first thing that is considered on how much it’ll cost. My wife and I are thinking of looking for a specialist that does custom engraved grave markers because she’s considering adding more decorations to her mother’s stone. I think it’s a good idea for my wife to consider all of her options when choosing a reputable professional to help us beautify her mother’s memorial monument.

Hi, This is Eric Yang.I need to order a Marker for my dear mother her funeral service will be 10/21/2020, Wednesday. however, her grave site is right next to my father he passed away 25 years ago. I consider it could be a good time to change his marker to a combined companion marker with my mother when we bury her. that says a 44×14 size granite marker would be our choice. Please advise the cost and the selections (and colors) of material of granite. and, how soon this can be made and delivered to the site, although installation may not really be a must at the same day of burial, but, preferred.please respond ASAP. Thanks,or, may call me at 310-378-6232 for prompt decision. BTW, the graveyard is Rose Hill of Whittier, CA.

My Mom passed away in 1982 and was buried in Arnett, OK. and a grave marker has never been put on her grave. My brother just passed away April 1, 2021, and his desire was to have his ashes buried there with my Mom. I would like to check pricing and suggestions for a small marble or bronze (whichever is less expensive). I need help in deciding on what is inscribed on the marker and want to make it one marker with both their names, dates of birth/death on both, and an appropriate memorial written that will fit nicely on it.

I am just now seeing your comment some 10 months later Mr Blake. Oh my. I still do not have a marker for my brother. It has been a hectic past 10 months as we lost our Mother too in April. Would like to check back and find out about a granite marker for my beloved brother who passed last July and still has no headstone 🙁 No one can afford those high prices so I am trying again to find out – the bronze I know I cannot afford so granite with a vase or marble with a vase would probably work fine. At this point anything as it is disturbing that no one has come up with any funds to get this done. I feel bad for my brother. Thank you – Ms Mona

Our mother passed away January 2017, and our father January 2021, We have the headstone that our parents purchased some years ago. We would like a ledger that covers 7 feet by 7 feet. We don’t think we can afford it, but we would like to at least see something that isn’t so costly. There is nothing but the headstone out there now. Several places have given us the run around. We are aware that it is taking a little longer due to Covid supply chain. Please advise?

Not a good way to get business. A lot of folks have lost family members and their whole families in the last 2 years. I suggest you start putting prices on the questions people are asking. I will not deal with you because you are not doing that & saying someone will get back to you.

I do genealogy and have come across a handful of relatives that do not have grave markers or gravestones. Since I’m the one that has rediscovered my ancestry, I feel responsible to leave their graves marked. I’m wondering if there is a bulk deal if more than one grave and headstone is needed. Do you offer veterans discounts? Thanks. This is in Washington DC.
